CHECK-IN PROCESS - Students
Once the I-20/DS-2019 form has been issued, a student can start the checking process on our online system (ISSS). However, the student's check-in will not be considered complete until he/she comes to the University of Florida International Center (UFIC) . When the students arrive at the University of Florida to start their academic program, they need to come to our center as soon as possible. UFIC is in The HUB which is located at 1765 Stadium Road. Students with an F-1 visa/I-20 form must go to suite 170 (International Student Services reception) in The HUB and students holding a J-1 visa/DS-2019 form must go to suite 190 (Exchange Visitor Services reception) in The HUB. All international students coming to the University of Florida are responsible for maintaining legal non-immigrant status and valid insurance coverage.
During check-in, UFIC will check the student's record to advise them of any holds present in the record and how to clear them. Frequently, students have the immunization hold and the emergency contact hold. To clear the immunization hold, students have to submit immunization documentation to the Health Compliance Office of the Student Health Care Center (SHCC).
All international students must report their United States local home physical address (no P.O. Boxes) to the University of Florida as it is required that we have the correct home address for our students at all times.
Students can get their University of Florida Identification Card (Gator1Card) at the Bookstore and Welcome Center.
Students with an Assistantship/Fellowship or on-campus employment, will need to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) at the Social Security Administration Office. The application process will require the student's immigration documents (passport, visa, I-94 record, Continued Attendance I-20 or DS-2019), the offer letter, the UFIC verification letter and Social Security application form. Additional information will be provided during check-in.
F-1 Student Check-In Process
When checking in, F-1 students must read, sign and submit the Responsibility Form to UFIC. Students are required to bring their I-20, (and previous I-20s for SEVIS Transfer students), passport, visa, and I-901 SEVIS Fee Receipt to UFIC. SEVIS Transfer students have 15 days from the first day of class to complete the check-in procedure.
Once F-1 students are registered for classes, UFIC will report their enrollment status in the Student and Exchange Visitors Information System (SEVIS) showing that students are in active status at UF. F-1 students will receive an email notification to pick up their Continued Attendance I-20. The new I-20 will be signed for travel outside the United States, valid for only one year, for as many trips as needed during that year. This I-20 can be turned in for a new travel signature, in subsequent years, if future travel is needed. Receiving the updated travel signature typically takes about a week.
J-1 Student Check-In Process
When checking in, J-1 students are required to bring their DS-2019, (and previous DS-2019s for SEVIS Transfer students), passport, and visa. J-1 students will get their SEVIS record validated after the drop/add period, which is typically the first week of classes of the semester. If a J-1 student or J-2 dependent needs to travel, he/she can request a travel signature to be given on the current DS-2019 by bringing it to the Exchange Visitor Services office in 190 HUB.
All international non-UF sponsored students (AMIDEAST, IIE, LASPAU, USAID, VED, FORD, and OAS) must check-in with the Director Debra Anderson.
Every semester the Emergency Contact Hold as well as other holds are placed on all University of Florida student accounts. These holds need to be cleared by the student before the student can have access to their course(s). Students have tofollow these instructions to clear the hold(s):
